Good Morning. Well guys nothing has changed overnight and all the available models/maps and data are pointing to one thing, lots of rain, snow and cold temperatures! It’s warm out there currently, with many places in the mid to late teens with gusty NW winds. As the day progresses the weather will slowly deteriorate with rain pushing north to Christchurch around midday. With this temperatures will gradually drop and by this evening most places will see patchy rain with cool temperatures. As we head into Tuesday the weather heads downhill further with heavy periods of rain in most places with fresh SE winds, many places will struggle to get to double digits and slowly the freezing levels will start to drop and with that snow will start falling around the foothills above 400-500m. As a whole, Tuesday is looking bleak. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday conditions start to ease and by Wednesday afternoon we should be seeing sunny spells with showers clearing from the south. Basically guys this has the potential to be a significant event because of the very slow nature of the whole system .The cold air racing north and the warm moist air from the Tasman is going to meet over Canterbury and slow and almost stall over us, the recipe for heavy snow and rain. IF this was June/July we could be looking at an almost a sea level event! More Info: Summary • Conditions will start to turn around midday and not ease off until Wednesday morning • Heavy rain will effect most of Canterbury, with the heaviest falls of rain in North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast. • Snow could fall as low as 300m, but we think it’s more likely to fall to around 500m.Above 800m there could be significant falls especially in Mid and North Canterbury.50cm above 800m is possible. • All the alpine roads and passes are likely to be affected and closed from tomorrow morning as the snow level drops • Mt Hutt could receive 60cm plus, great end to their huge season! • Tuesday is basically looking horrible everywhere over the region and most places will struggle to double digits That’s a wrap guys, please keep the updates coming in during the day as the weather packs in.
