If any of you are familiar with the Orthodox icon, you will see that I have taken some liberties with the image. I have chosen to portray the Virgin as a fearless young woman who will embrace the joys and sorrows that lie before her. The child Jesus is portrayed as the infant in swaddling clothes of the manger in Bethlehem. Mary has crossed her arms beneath her womb, cradling and protecting Gods most precious gift.The image of the dove recalls the moment when By the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. Our Lady of the Sign presents Jesus as the new sun who rises on the horizon of humanity. He comes to comfort the poor, the afflicted, the fearful and the anxious by becoming their joy and their hope.
