Good day Bertie, My name is Edeline and I am a lady who has a passion for serving others and encouraging them to live beyond circumstances that may seem like stumbling blocks. I took up long distance running in 2011 and have not looked back since. I am currently a member of the Nedbank Running Club. Over time, I have felt compelled to do something in order to give back. Though I am not well resourced to do so, I thought to use the ability to run in order to give back and so I signed up to become a fundraising activist for Newkidz on the Block. Through the project dubbed “Mission Possible”, I intend to assist in raising funds for Newkidz whose endeavour is ensure safe living environments for the children of South Africa (newkidz.org.za). Above all, we hope to encourage individuals to foster, mentor or adopt children so they too can experience the warmth of being part of a loving family. I have been organizing events as well as taking part in challenges in order to raise funds and bring attention to the plight of orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa. https://givengain/activist/90569/ At present, there are over 3.5 million orphans and the number is projected to increase to over 5million by 2015. Over Easter weekend, I ran the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon back to back (a total of 112km continuously). The initiative was a great eye opener, and the media coverage along with the encouragement from individuals is what spurred me on to take the next challenge. On the 20th of July, I am hoping to host a race for Mandela day. The 67 minute challenge will be put out to running clubs and the public to try and run a 9.4km in 67minutes in a form of relay that will go around the city in 10 laps (94km in total, the age of Nelson Mandela). The challenge to runners will be to run 9.4km in 67 minutes and to make it fun, be in a costume that says something about what Mandela Day means to them. So say from example if Brackenfell Running Club is the first pit stop, runners will do about 9.5km to the next pitstop hosted in Belleville by Nedbank. From Belleville the next pitstop could be hosted in Gugulethu, Pinelands, Sea Point and progress till we have made something of a circular route around the city. I will also be approaching media institutions to have some form of road show/outreach with us to interact with their fans where possible as a means of attracting more individuals to take part. Since there are running clubs dotted around the city, we will ask say 10 clubs to host a pit-stop each. These 10 clubs will be spread out about 9.5km apart. (The goal is to complete 95km, Nelson Mandela’s age) A pit stop will basically be a registration point and the start of each 67 minute loop. Runners can take part in just one loop or do a few if they choose. Being the adrenaline junkie that I am, it is my hope to do all 10 legs and also putting the challenge out there to other runners for an extreme adventure. While the run is aimed at creating awareness, we are also hoping to use it as a fundraising event where runners can donate R67. If they would like, they can also ask friends & family to sponsor them per kilometre or minute. Prizes will be given to those who have the most creative costumes and also those who are able to compete the most loops and blue ribbons and certificates of merit will be given to those who complete the race. My earnest appeal to you is for Century City AC to host a pit stop on the proposed date, Saturday 20 July. Please find attached route map to select a spot that would be most convenient for you. I would greatly appreciate your participation and look forward to hearing from you soon.
