Good evening. It is 6:32 our time. I called the radio earlier and gave the elders the report on Baby Em. When I do the call-in on air, I usually do it in the native language because its the elders that listen to the radio at that hour and its for their benefit. So I did that shortly after six our time back home. And I post and update on Facebook for the ones that read. I dont know if I can do justice on all the information that was given to us by the doctor when we met with him this afternoon. He was very good at explaining things to us and gave us time to ask any questions if we had any. Baby Em has been on the ECMO machine for 33 days now. He explained the machine is an artificial heart that does all the work a regular heart does. And baby Em has done well and has been getting better in all areas. There has been a lot of things that have happened to Baby Em starting right from her birth. She was premature, she had surgery at day 7. She developed RSV and had pneumonia which caused her lungs to be severely infected. Without the ECMO, Baby Em would not have survived but they got her in time when the team went to Winnipeg to pick her up. There have been other things that have happened to her even after getting here but she has been able to get passed those events. One was when the bubble may have got into her brain after the blood developed clots in the line. That could have cause injury to the brain. She had seizures shortly thereafter. The other was when the right side of her heart stopped functioning. A nerve may have been damaged and that might cause the right side of her face to droop. He feels that Baby Em is doing well and that they wont know if any of the stuff that has happened will have long term impact on her. I guess only time will tell. They are really keeping close watch on her heart. They will check her again tomorrow. They will do the ECHO and see if there is further improvement on the right side of the heart. They hope to have her off of the ECMO by Monday or Tuesday. The same doctor will be the one to oversee the procedures on Baby Em. He made it clear to us that she is not out of the woods. The next five days are very crucial for Baby Em. We ask for your prayers for her.
