Good evening folks :) A Judging insight continued. Most of the qualification panels and major competitions are judged by five judges with a jury chairman presiding over them. When judging individual images, the judges would evaluate each image for approximately one to two minutes, then enter their score onto an electronic pad. Scores would typically range from zero to one hundred. The individual jurors would not know what any of the other judged have scored. The jury chairman does know what the individual judges have scored though. A ‘challenge’ will be raised when any one juror’s score is ten points or more adrift from the average score, up or down. The chairman would then announce, as an example…The average score is 75 and juror number two has scored 60. Juror number two is then passed a mike to endeavor to justify why his/her score was, in this case, lower than the others. He/she will say his/her piece giving the majority, who aren’t always right, the opportunity to agree or disagree with his/her observations and reflect that in the re-score. Whilst I’ve said that the majorly aren’t always right, in my experience as a judge, the majority are right 90% to 100% of the time. This is only a small part on judging and I will periodically drop more posts in on this. As well as the all-important and fascinating, what do judges look for? Bjorn :)
