Good morning FBF. Saturday was very interesting for local and national politics! It had both fun and intrigue! By day’s end I had two new politicians I am supporting, being Krystal Crittendon for Mayor and Osei Bomani for Detroit City Council. I didn’t particularly support either at day break, so this was rather momentous. Went to the 13th Congressional District meeting and we gave our endorsement to Atty. Crittendon for Mayor. That was a shocker! I guess I haven’t kept up with the stuff going on in the 13th. Apparently it wasn’t bad enough that we had to have 2 elections to determine our chairperson. Frazier Kimpson, who I consider a good person, lost both times; first to Rev. David Bullock and then to State Senator Martha Scott. I supported Bullock and Scott. Now, rather than come together as one, the Kimpson folks, which includes some of my best friends, have started a splinter group. I am so distraught to hear that! Anyway, I voted to endorse Crittendon because she was the only candidate (aren’t there 12 of them?) to bother to show up to our meeting and because of what she said to us. She reminded us that she gave up her job, as corporation counsel for the city, to do what was right for Detroit. That’s doing a lot! Then dashed down to the Trayvon rally. I’d say the crowd count was between 300-500, so not a bad showing. I didn’t hear anyone mention the inspirational words of my President from Friday when he said that Trayvon could have been him 35yrs ago and that we need to take another look at any law which encourages, rather than discourages gun violence. Numerous speakers gave rabble rousing speeches reflecting the outrage the black and liberal white communities feel about that extremely unjust verdict. Then there was a reception for native Detroiter Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, who came back home to support Council candidate Osei Bomani. I don’t know a whole lot about Bomani (who has twice told me people get our surnames mixed up), but Chokwe is a hero of mine, so whomever he supports gets strong, strong consideration from me. I sat next to my friend Atty. Gerald Evelyn and numerous other progressives were in the house. Chokwe spoke at some length and described our bankruptcy as ‘The Empire Strikes Back!’ A very politically stimulating day.
