Good morning! Id like to present to you a few guidelines on supporting original music. If youre thinking to yourself I really dont care about supporting original music, I encourage you to read this. Please share with your friends! *also these are NOT tips on how to play live original music. Thats a totally different set of guidelines and I wouldnt even attempt to make a list about that haha!* 1. Spotify vs. Youtube- If you use Youtube like a jukebox, please be aware that unless the video you are watching has been posted by the artist AND the artist has gotten enough views to become a partner with Youtube, no one is getting paid except Youtube. Try to make an effort to listen to the artist on Spotify. Though the royalties are low, they are royalties and a percentage of that goes to the artist. It aint pretty, but it is genuine support. 2. iTunes and Pirating- Speaking from a purely economic standpoint, the cost of music has been driven down to zero because of Youtube and piracy. I dont know one single person that hasnt done it at some point, but it has to stop. You as the consumer of music must make an effort to purchase the music you enjoy listening to. Thats all there is to it. Do the right thing. Support the artist, and you will see art grow. 3. Live shows and merchandise- Performing live music is the pinnacle of the creative process for many musicians. Theres no better feeling in the world than seeing your original music directly affect the audience in a positive way. The difficult part is making original shows profitable for clubs. Money is not an evil thing, and money and art have to be related, if the art is to continue. Going to a live show is without a doubt the best way to support an artist you love. Pick up a t-shirt, or sticker, or cd if you can! Display it with pride!!! 4. The future and some personal thoughts- Music is at a crossroads. The digital revolution has completely changed the way music is delivered, and consumed, and so we as consumers of music must also change. Somewhere along the way, it seems to me as though supporting original music got this label as being pretentious, even haughty. Nothing could be further from the truth! Remember, all music was new and original at one point. The Beatles, GNR, Nirvana. Consider the fact that those bands were once unknown. Consider the fact that at one time, no one knew the intro to Sweet Child of Mine. Consider the fact that the first time anyone heard Smells like Teen Spirit, it was in a club. The great thing about musicians is that we dont quit. We will always continue to play and write original music, not because we want to be rich and famous, but because we are hopelessly in love with the craft of songwriting and performance. But we must ALL be smart consumers if we intend for art to grow (and art must grow, or it dies.) Support art. Think of the bigger picture. Thanks for reading!
