Good morning MDOTers! Each week, you may have noticed on electronic message boards on freeways, or in MDOT social media posts, a message stating how many people have lost their lives on Michigan roads so far this year. This isnt a scare tactic or sensationalizing these tragedies - its a simple and inexpensive way to educate the public on the scope of one of the most challenging issues facing Michigan, and the nation. More than 35,000 fatalities occur on U.S. highways each year, with driver behavior factoring into nearly 90 percent of all fatal crashes. One key to changing driver behavior is education. As of yesterday, 3/18, there were 133 reported fatalities statewide in 2014, an increase of 9 from last week. In addition, 718 serious injuries have occurred on roadways statewide, an increase of 51. While these are the lowest week-to-week increases so far this year, even one death is too many. We can all work together to move #TowardZeroDeaths. To help put these figures into context, here are the numbers of fatalities reported by other states: Minnesota – 56 Wisconsin – 69 Kentucky – 109 Missouri – 121 Illinois – 126 Everyone be safe out there.
