Good morning, all! Helpful hint of the day - when buying a piece - TopicsExpress

Good morning, all! Helpful hint of the day - when buying a piece of furniture from a random, Internet ad, please be wary of the phrase, solid wood, very heavy. Solid wood furniture, as a rule, is not *very* heavy. Especially older pieces that are drier. I can usually carry an average sized dresser by myself. Theyre more cumbersome than actually heavy just due to their size. Particle board is where weight comes in. PB weighs a ton. Or at least feels like it does. :) Particle board is not necessarily always a bad thing. Even higher end brands use it on some pieces. A dresser made by Bassett or Thomasville or Drexel, that has a pb top covered in laminate, will still be a great piece with their usual attention to detail. You may even run across non branded pieces that despite some pb, can be great quality. The point is, dont be fooled by the ad posters description; which is generally out of ignorance, not malice. Check the piece out carefully before buying. This can be a good negotiating point too if the piece was advertised as solid wood, but isnt. You can probably knock a few bucks off the price if you do want it. Every piece of furniture that I sell, will include in the description, what the materials are. Probably 95% of what I sell is solid wood. If it isnt, know that Ill tell you where the pb is and that it will still be a quality piece. Long post, sorry. You may now carry on about your usual business. :)
