Good morning, and welcome to Life and Works annual outing to the Assembly Halls. The General Assembly ceremonials have passed with the usual warmth. The outgoing Moderator, the (now) Very Rev Lorna Hood, thanked the Assembly for the honour and said that the church was still lighting up dark places with its message of hope, not only in words but also in actions, reaching out to the weary and marginalised, the lost and the lonely. New Moderator, the (now) Right Rev John Chalmers, said it was a privilege and honour and humbling to stand in the shoes of giants of the past, specifically Prof John Burleigh, Moderator in 1960, whose robes he is wearing. Prince Edward, Lord High Commissioner, spoke of the churchs importance in community and the Christian character of Scotland, and the difference that can be made by a small number of committed, energetic volunteers. As for the rest of the day, an amendment to the Assembly Arrangements Committees deliverance has been proposed that would lead the committee to consider whether the Assembly might meet every two years in order to release time, energy and other resources for deployment at Presbytery level. An Overture from the Presbytery of Argyll to that effect has been withdrawn. UPDATE: that amendment has been accepted and the Assembly Arrangements Committee will report on the proposal in 2016.
