Good morning, and welcome to whats shaping up to be a very eventful Tuesday in the weather department...a high wind warning for the Portland area kicks in at 8 AM, though itll be later in the day when the strongest gusts--up to 60 MPH--will be felt, primarily in the eastern parts of the metro area. That will bring down trees and it will cause power outages. And itll be really cold. Then from Wednesday night into Thursday, were flirting with freezing rain, though the usually smart money is betting against it--except in the Gorge, from Washougal east, which might get coated with ice and dumped on with snow. Thatll become clearer in the next day, obviously, but for now, its time to think of the things that you might wish you had. Got batteries? Its Tuesday...the 11th of November...the day we thank our veterans for their service (and also closing schools and not delivering the mail). The veteran whos on my mind is my Pop, whom I lost in February, and who was full of stories of his Army service from the end of WWII to the start of the Korean war, when he was called back from a Colorado honeymoon to return to active duty (I was born on an Army base). (He and Mom returned to finish their Colorado honeymoon for the next sixty years). Dad always said theres a distinction between honoring veterans, which he appreciated, and automatically endorsing the policies which come down from political leaders of varying degrees of wisdom. And he thought it outrageous (unbelievable was his word) that the country would say thank you for your serviceand yet allow those same veterans to literally die from, or at least with, medical issues neglected by the VA. Love the way my Dad thought, and I sincerely thank him and all veterans for their service. Portland is about to have a fast and furious debate over the latest and apparently final street fee from Mayor Hales and Commissioner Novick. Its a city income tax that charges zero if youre making under $25K, climbing step by step to $900 annually if youre making around 300K. Therell be one public hearing and first reading on November 20 and a final vote on December 3. No city-wide election--unless voters rise up and refer it. Oregons last unresolved legislative race has been decided in favor of Democrat Chuck Riley over Republican incumbent Bruce Starr in Washington County. Both houses are now a very solid blue with implications for school funding, measures on gun violence, and more in the upcoming legislative session. A horrible ending to a nasty divorce as a man with an alleged history of heavy drinking and drug use killed his ex at her home in southwest Portland, then grabbed their two daughters, took them to his home in NE, and shot himself fatally. Th South Korean ferry captain who leaped to safety while hundreds of high school kids died in a sinking ship was sentenced today to 36 years in prison. Prosecutors wanted the death penalty. Theres Twitter buzz over a scene at a state event in Beijing today where Russian President Vladimir Putin was photographed slipping a shawl over the shoulders of Chinas first lady. Some reports say he appeared to be hitting on her, though others say it looked like a simple act of courtesy. Chinese censors caused it to disappear from social media. She discretely slipped it back off and handed it to an aid. It was on this date in 1992 that the first time, women were permitted to become priests of the Church of England. Leonardo DiCaprio hits the big four-oh to. Demi Moor is 52. Calista Flockhart, star of the saucy Ally McBeal and married to Harrison Ford, is 50. Funny video going around today...kids trying to take pictures with film cameras....priceless expressions of bafflement..... With that, Im warming up the Subaru and heading in to the radio ranch for a fun morning with Bruce and Janine. Let me know what youre seeing and doing, weatherwise or not. Enjoy Tuesday, and thanks, Vets!
