Good morning concerned disability advocates, Nothing defines a community’s quality of life better than the condition, variety and affordability of its housing stock. Housing defines the place we call home. It is an economic development attraction and retention tool. Municipalities and school districts rely heavily on taxes generated by residential properties. In 2002, Cortland County last developed a Consolidated Plan for Housing. That Plan provided a vision for housing across the County. It was successful in generating millions of dollars in grant funded projects alone. Today that Plan is obsolete. It is outdated. It fails to reflect a vision of today’s housing needs for our community. It fails to engage private developers and it lacks a strategy that relates to business growth and the changing needs our families. Cortland County needs to develop and implement a strategic plan to improve housing for all people in our community. Tell our legislators to fund, develop and execute a strategic plan for housing. It’s good for our residents and it’s good for our economy. ACTION 1: Contact your County Legislator and tell them: “I am one of your constituents and believe it is important that you support a full and thorough update to the County Consolidated Plan for Housing. Cortland County needs a vision and strategy for housing that reflects today’s housing needs.” Find your Legislators contact information here: cortland-co.org/Legislature/index.html ACTION 2: Join us for the County Legislature’s Agriculture / Planning / Environment Committee meeting. The Committee will be discussing the need for an updated Consolidated Plan for Housing and it is important that they hear from you! The meeting will be held on Thursday, May 8 at 10:00 am at the County Office Building, Room 304. The meeting is open to the public and we want you to join the discussion and tell County Legislators why it is ESSENTIAL to have vision and strategy for housing in our community! There are so many facets to housing and how it relates to our lives, our neighborhoods and our community. What is your vision for housing in Cortland County? Attend the meeting to make sure your voice is heard! Thank you for your continued advocacy! Aaron T. Baier Consumer & Systems Advocacy Coordinator
