Good morning everyone:) Yesterday was a very difficult day for Raylee and I didnt have much mental capacity to form an update that would make much sense at all, but after a decent nights rest Im ready to go today! Raylees third spacing has resolved its self. His skin is looking back to normal with very little puffiness and no discoloration. His legs only hurt a little but they are pretty much immobile and only hurt if he has to be moved or rolled over in the bed to check for pressure sores. They have had to cathflo his main line to get better blood return because of tiny clots, a couple of times, but it is still looking good. The main concern of the doctors right now are his lungs. He had an episode yesterday where the nurse took off his ventilator to clean his face and give him some sips of water and all he could stand was 30 seconds. He couldnt breathe without it at all and went into brachicardia. Really low heart rate. Normal is 90-100, his was 48. It took him some time to recover from it and it scared him terribly. I thought I would need a new heart. He was exactly like a fish out of water, moving his chest and opening his mouth but not getting any oxygen. The doctors are trying to figure out if he cant breathe from his lungs being damaged or from the anxiety he has when the vent is taken off. It is horrible to watch and heartbreaking. The ortho doctor came in this morning and I asked him to explain to Raylee, now that he is more coherent, what happened when his chair flipped forward. He explained to him that his bones, because he has been in a wheelchair for years now and he doesnt have everyday stress on them like you and I, have become very weak and thin, similar to that of 80 or 90 year olds. He went on to say that unextraordinary force to an abnormal bone can have the same consequence as extraordinary force to a normal bone. The force of his dad making a hard brake at a red light may have caused you or I to get a contusion, had we ended up in Raylees position, but because of Raylees weak and thin bones, it caused him to have breaks. I was taking care of my duties at Angel Ride, but from what I understand from Raylee, Christian, Raylees dad and our nurse Lisa that was in the car with them (they were going trick or treating since it was Halloween), was that the light at Fairhope avenue and 98 had turned yellow and because his dad didnt want to run a red light he braked harder than usual. With the weight of Raylee and Christian and their chairs(Raylees weighs in excess of 300 lbs + he weighs 215 lbs, Christians weighs in excess of 200 lbs + he weighs almost 100lbs), the size of the van + Dennis and Lisa, you can imagine that it was harder to stop than say a hard brake in a Kia. So, small hit, big break. He told Raylee that he has done surgery on little old ladies that have broken their hips while turning over in bed. Its just that easy. The van has only 4 tethers to tie the boys wheelchairs in, they need 8, so they have to be tethered with two instead of 4. I know that this isnt perfect and possibly was too much weight to bear. Also he was elevated and reclined in his chair, which makes him more comfortable, making it top heavy. Me being a single mother of two handicapped boys that isnt able to have a 40 hr work week because I am their main caregiver, I get tired and embarrassed asking for things and things being handed to us at times. I have known that this issue of the tethers needed to be addressed since Christian got into his wheelchair a year ago but other things, like their ramp into our home that was rotten and falling to pieces and visits to their specialists in Ohio 2 weeks ago where they get the BEST care in the nation, took precedence at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 isnt it? This is what caused the accident, for lack of a better word, with Raylee. It was not a crash. Christian, Lisa nor Dennis were even close to injured thank God and the stars. This was a FREAK accident and how Raylees dad was able to right Raylee and his chair (close to 600 lbs.) to get him to the E.R. which was .1 away, is nothing short of a miracle. Dennis is skinny and might weigh 170 wet~no offense Dennis. I nor the rest of my family blame Raylees dad for this. He is beating himself up more than all of this world combined could. I cant go into detail about what happened at Thomas Hospital because of a possible pending law suit but know that I am not happy. Raylee was at home recovering from what we thought were just contusions, with his dad, while I went on to Angel Ride to carry on with my duties for the day. I spoke to his dad every 30 min. to check on him and got the call that he was non responsive at 4pm. I told Dennis to take him straight to USA Childrens and Womens. I rushed over to the hospital to a scene in the E.R. that no parent should ever have to witness. On a lighter note, he is finally asking for his Xbox:) Thats my Raylee! And for his friends again!! Now, Im exhausted again from trying to explain this in words you will all understand. Love, light, strength and prayers for Raylee please. XOXO, Carissa
