Good morning, friends! You know whats coming ............ a reminder about tomorrows much anticipated Silver Maple House Concert with Pittsburghs own The Squirrel Hillbillies ..... if you like GOOD folk music, you should come out ... Steve and I think theyre wonderful ..... we went to see them at Bednars Farm Market in McDonald last year after they had played here. Its so easy to get lost in the lyrics and melodies of their songs, and the perfect blending of their voices. The weather people are saying a 30% chance of rain - which means 70% chance of no rain ... Im not jinxing us by taking the chairs out of the music room too early, though ... really want to see them playing on the stage this year ... it POURED down rain when they were here last year, and during a break in the deluge we ducked outside to take a couple of photos of them under the tree ..... before the cool stage that Phil built this year. Theyre barefoot people like me, and we have a leftover section of the carpet Dan Tonini donated and installed in the music room to roll out on the stage to cushion their toes ... We have such a great bunch of people in our house concert circle here. First, of course, the musicians who have become family to us. Theres a lot of hard work that goes into each house concert, and we have good friends who pitch in to help with adding pot luck dishes to the table, help to set up and clean up, bring new friends with them when they can. I always smile around 6 when I look out and see some new faces in the chairs, some folks who came last time and decided to return, and of course those of you who havent missed many concerts over the past six years. Live music is on shaky ground in so many ways these days - venue owners who are opting for karaoke, open mike, open jukebox nights are making it rough on musicians who play their music as their livelihood. House concerts are becoming increasingly popular throughout the U.S. and Europe as a means of connecting these wonderful artists with people who are truly there to listen to the music, not just tolerate it as background noise which happens so much in clubs these days. Steve and I rarely go out at night to listen to our musician friends, because I get so aggravated because no one seems to want to sit and enjoy the music anymore. Were extremely pleased to be welcoming back our quirky folk music duo, Jenny and Gary, aka The Squirrel Hillbillies. They play an eclectic mix of folk, country, and blues music. Some of their songs are timeless tunes theyve brought to the surface; others are songs theyve written themselves. They are Pittsburghs own musicians, and are regular performers at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, International Childrens Festival, Carnegie Music Library, Market Square Concerts, Hillman Center for Performing Arts, etc. Wont you please come out and give a warm Mon Valley welcome to our friends? They just came back from a European tour, and Im sure will have some travel tales to share with us ... After they were here last year, Steve and I spent an enjoyable afternoon absorbing their music when they performed at Bednars Farm Market in McDonald. I always feel bad when its time for them to pack up their instruments ... Dinner will be at 6 - seems to be working well so far this year - music will start promptly at 7 - theyll play a set, take a seconds/dessert/coffee break, then play a second set. Well finish up before 10, to keep peace with the neighbors, as usual. Your minimum suggested donation of $10 to their travel fund jar will reward you with a pot luck dinner, desserts, soft drinks and coffee (BYOB), the company of friends, old and new, and most of all, some of the best music in the Burgh. Music does the mind, body, soul, and disposition a world of good, you see ... Hope to see you on Saturday ... and, thanks again to all of you good souls who support live music, local music, independent musicians, traveling musicians, Last Honkytonk Music Series musicians and venues, and House Concerts. Looking forward to seeing your faces come around the house on Saturday .. and if it rains, well move inside ... so come on out anyway ... Enjoy Jenny and Gary performing Once In A While at Bednars Farm Market last October .. https://youtube/watch?v=ss5yJ6nXbw8
