Good morning members and friends of Johnson Chapel Whiteville, TN. Today is July 20, the third Sunday, come as you are or show your colors Sunday (Your Greek organization, your College, high school etc) Sermon notes for today are: God Said It, and That Settles It Prayer: Gracious and eternal God we come into your presence, in Your house and on this another Lord’s day to praise You, for You are God all by yourself. We know that there is none other than you and there is none like you. Lord You made this universe and yet you can exist inside your own creation, who could not love a God like You. We have come this Sunday to hear a word from, You. We read in your word that faith comes from hearing and hearing form the word of God, and how can we hear Your word except there be a preacher, and how can one preach except he or she be called and sent of God. We love You, we praise You, we worship You and we wait patiently for Your word. Lord I ask that You speak to and through me today and that You allow the words of my mouth and the meditation in my heart to be both pleasing and acceptable in Your sight, You are my rock, my strength and my redeemer, Amen. Genesis 28:10-19a. 10. Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13. And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: “I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14. Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” 16. Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17. And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!” 18. Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. 19. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. Body of the Homily: Church, we live in a precarious world today, things are happening so rapidly that we not only cannot understand it but can’t even keep it all organized in our minds. Plains being downed by missiles, countries invading other countries and gang wars in the neighborhoods in Chicago running ramped. We wonder, where and when will it all end. Things and events happening half way around the world affect us here in the middle of the United States. From verse 15 which reads, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” We take our sermon topic,” God Said It And That Settles It. As practicing Christians we all realize that God’s word can and will preform all that God sends it out to do. Let us look at some of the aspects of God’s word and what it does: 1. God spoke the world and the universe into existence, He said it and the stars filled the heavens, the green grass grew from the ground, the birds populated the ear and the fish and water dwelling animals populated the sea. You see God’s word can and does do miraculous things. 2. Let’s look at Jacob as he lay down for a night’s sleep, he say the sky open us and a ladder extended from the earth to heaven, and Jacob say angels ascending and descending from heaven to earth and back again. Jacob was in awe because he had been given such a vision, but he was elated to hear that his descendants would be as the sands on the sea shore. 3. God made Jacob a promise, and when God gives his word, whatever God has promised will surely come to pass. Let’s look at some of God’s promises: God promised Abraham and Sarah a son, even though they were advanced in age, and God delivered. God told Noah that he should build an Ark, because it was going to rain, and rain it did for 40 days and 40 nights until all life that walked on the earth was destroyed save what was on the ark. God said that he would save us from ourselves, for we are the ones who separated ourselves from God. And true to his word, God sent his only begotten son, Jesus to redeem us from our sins, by dying on the Cross at Calvary. When Jesus left the earth, He said he would not leave us comfortless, and so He sent us the Holy Spirit to comfort and to lead us, Jesus said that he was going away to prepare a place for us, so that where he is there we would be also. Christian friends, your mansion and my mansion are there in Gods place of residence, simply waiting for the final pieces of the puzzle to be put into place. I am referring to that Great Day when all of God’s children get together, and we see Jesus coming back to earth on a cloud and the whole world will see him, and all of the raptured saints will be with him. Church, God said it and that settles it, whether you believe it or not. Amen
