Good morning my delightful family. A cool Saturday has arrived as we breathe in the weekend safe and sound and I say Thank You Sweet Lord. Its a little breezy with the cool front blowing in but its going to be a gorgeous day. I was smiling and thinking about those little convenience stores we had growing up. I remember these stores so well as they were usually made of wood or block cement and they would usually have a kerosene tank for those families who still didnt have electricity and used kerosene lamps. Back in the day we would be sent to the tiendita (little store) for bread or milk as those were the chief items we usually would run out of. In fact two uncles and my grandfather all owned a tiendita at one point in their lives. There was a small tiendita I would frequent almost every afternoon during our summer vacation from school. My mama would lay down to take a nap after feeding her brood right after lunch. This was when I would race off on my green spider bike to E & A, a tiendita that was located in Pharr, Tx right next to the Blue Moon Dance Hall. My brother and I had our little collection of coins that I would retrieve from a recliner we owned that would greedily snatch up money whenever people sat in it and reclined. Also back then all one needed were empty soda bottles that were easy to find and to redeem for a few pennies but a few pennies were all we needed. Most of yall are around my age and can remember how you could go into a little tiendita and with 5 single pennies come out with a little brown bag full of sugary goodness. It seemed that we knew exactly what candy to buy to get the most bang out of for our coins/soda bottles. Those were the days when a kid could ride his bike without danger of being snatched up and store owners might throw in an extra piece of penny candy just because they nice folk. How Id love to go back for one day and be that little kid riding his green spider bike fetching sweet treats for my bother and me. Alas I cant but am totally grateful for the memories as they fill my heart with joy. Although penny candy is now a thing of the past, simple pleasures in life are still abound if we seek them out. Heres hoping that there are a couple of simple pleasures awaiting each of yalls weekend. Have a simply sensational day which it will be when you tell the world, Hey world this is my day!
