Good morning peeps! Our 11yr old son starts high school next year - TopicsExpress

Good morning peeps! Our 11yr old son starts high school next year and we have enrolled him at the local public high school in town (we live in a quiet rural village about 20 minutes out of town). Our son is kind, smart, polite, funny, disorganised ...and immature. The local high school has some really great education plans, which I think would really suit him BUT many of the kids come from families that dont respect education or authority, the kids swear (a lot) at each other and the teachers, are tough and unaccepting of differences, and they do seem to have their fair share of bullying. Why on earth are you sending him there?? you may ask? The teachers at our small school keep telling us that the education structure offered there will suit him, and that we shouldnt try to protect him from the world and all the different types of people in it forever - that he needs to develop the skills to handle these situations. So, do I try him at this school (whose education set up I love, but their students not so much) and see how he goes? Or do I look far and wide? I know all schools are going to have some problems, and I agree that he does need to meet people different to what hes used to and learn how to cope, but I worry that he will shut down in order to cope with the other students - and miss out on all the great education opportunities. Am I listening too much to the sick feelings in my stomach? All of his friends are younger than him, so he wont be going to high school with friends, no matter where we choose. Help!
