Good morning the word for today is shield – a large piece of metal, wood, etc., carried by someone (such as a soldier or police officer) for protection; something that defends or protects someone or something. In battle one Roman soldier would use his shield to protect his body from the onslaught of the enemy as he wielded his sword with the other hand. Several might put their shields together in a protective shell around themselves as a group to advance toward the enemy underneath the protection of their combined shields. They were protected from every angle above and all around. This reminds me of Psalm 3:3 “But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.” God’s shield protects us from every angle and lifting up our heads, God keeps us from being ashamed!! Another reference to a shield is found in the Apostle Paul’s writing to the church at Ephesus in which he urges all followers of Christ to be properly dressed for spiritual warfare “at all times.” The shield of faith, our faith in God that God will fulfill God’s promises to us, is what makes the enemy powerless over us! Ephesians 6: 11 Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. 15 As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16 With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Jesus went about “healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people (Matthew 4:23).” May God richly bless your journey!
