Good news! The Race Marshall has decided not to penalize Jeff for neglecting to sign out of the Sourdough checkpoint last night. Jeff had a chance to speak with him today at Mendeltna, and is positive that he told the Checkers his plan was to go on through the checkpoint. Since the Checkers did not prompt him to sign out at that time, the Marshall declared that they were also partially responsible for this technical error. Either way, I can guarantee that Jeff will never make this mistake again! :) After leaving Sourdough at 6 pm, Jeff continued on down the trail for another 2 hours, as planned. He stopped at about 8 pm with the intention of resting for 5 hours. Instead, he rested for 7 hours and got some much needed sleep - about which he has no regrets at this time :) Jeff rolled into the Mendeltna Creek Lodge checkpoint at about 10:20 am with a team of happy, perky dogs. He will stay here until 5 pm, at which point he will have fulfilled the 18 hour rest requirement of this race. As it stands now Jeff is in 15th place in a field of 49 mushers with 60 miles left to run. He is really happy with this place, and hopes to keep it into the finish. He is just in front of Melissa Owns, and we do not know yet how long she will rest here. This will be determined again by that total rest requirement, as well as the condition of her team. Regardless, if Jeff and the dogs continue to do exactly what they have been doing, all will finish very happy and satisfied around 1 am Tuesday morning. Thanks again for following! The next update you read might be from Jeff himself :)
