Good news for students. Last week, the House passed the Advancing Competency-Based Education Demonstration Project Act (H.R. 3136) and the Empowering Students through Enhanced Counseling Act (H.R. 4984). I voted in support of both bills, which will improve coursework options and financial awareness for the more than 20,000 students at UTEP and other El Paso schools. H.R. 3136: * Creates a pilot program that allows students to earn college credit by passing a subject-matter test, instead of logging coursework hours. Known as competency-based education, this policy would reduce both cost and time to earn a college degree. H.R. 4984: * Improves school counseling for federal financial aid recipients. *Students will learn about risks of taking on excessive debt, and federal loan and repayment options
