Good news from US Cellular Field tonight. The Tigers ended their 3 game losing streak beating the White Sox 9-1. Rick Porcello was the stopper tonight. In the process he went 9 innings for his 1st complete game of his career. He needed only 105 pitches (sorry Dave) to complete the task. I actually fell asleep after getting home from work. In the process I missed my umpire party at Hoyt Park. Did not get much sleep the prior two nights, probably due to the losing streak. However I woke up just in time for this game to start tonight. The Tigers got 15 hits on the night. However let’s be honest they were aided by 4 White Sox errors, 3 by Connor Gillaspie. While at the Little League level it is how you played the game not did you win or lose. However at the Major League level it is simply to steal the Oakland Raider phrase, “Just win baby.” That is what the Tigers did tonight. The Tigers started the game off right scoring 2 in the first. They got 2 hits but were aided by an error and a passed ball. They added 3 more runs in the 3rd. This inning they did all with 2 out. First Prince Fielder hit a home run, then a single and a walk, then another error and then a Alex Avila 2 run single. They added single runs in the 4th and 5th and then 2 more in the 9th. The hitting stars were Prince Fielder who went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI’s and Alex Avila who went 4 for 4 with 2 RBI’s of his own. The rest of the night was Rick’s night. He went the aforementioned 9 innings gave up 7 hits, struck out 5, walked 1 and gave up 1 earned run. He got stronger as the game went on. He actually retired 14 in a row before Dunn walked to lead off the 9th but he was quickly erased on a double play. After striking out Garcia Rick had his complete game victory. There was more good news from Cleveland tonight as well. The Royals beat the Tribe tonight to extend the Tigers lead over Cleveland to 5 ½ games. The Tigers face off with the Sox tomorrow night. Anibal Sanchez will take the mound in the final game of this 3 game series and final game of this 9 game road trip.
