Good players make good coaches! Coaching challenges are at all levels. So many coaches/academy owners/instructors like to take credit for developing players that play at the higher levels. The challenge is in the just miss players who love the game and desperately want to play at the next level. The true development of the player takes place when they are 9, 10 and 11, when the are very impressionable and coach-able. Very little development happens versus minor adjustments once these kids hit middle school. Programs that develop players the younger players are more valuable than the ones catering to the older kids. Organizations that are starting 14U and up are more of a marketing company than anything else. For a program to Claim a player in their program is now playing at a major DI school or was drafted and they only played with them as a 16, 17 or 18 year old is a far reach. If a program has 400 kids tryout for their team versus a team that has 25 kids tryout for a team, who will have more talent at their disposal? There is a huge disparity between the bigger city programs and the rest of the pool. I believe the programs having 400 kids trying out each season will continue to have the best talent. The downside to having all that talent is managing the expectations and personalities of all the parents involved as it is very difficult to manage the larger programs and they become more business like. The smaller program might be a little more personable because coaches have less to choose from. Some of the bigger programs will replace a player in a minute for lack of production and or just plain attitude issues. The small programs have to be a little more understanding.
