Good progress today on the King fire with containment increased to 17%. With higher humidity and relatively calm winds I expect containment will increase each day this week. Lots of back firing operations have been set up and can now be implemented. I expect the smoke to be better tomorrow. Today was the worst smoke conditions we have seen in many years -- probably not since the 2001 Star Fire in the upper American River canyon. In fact the King Fire is burning into the old Star scar, which will also help since the fuel load there is minimal. We are still looking for a big change come Wednesday. Temperatures will be much cooler and we still have a chance of light rain. This is not a quickie -- we should have a 2-4 day period of cool weather, mostly cloudy skies and periodic chances of light rain. Im very optimistic that by next weekend the King fire will be significantly contained. Fall equinox is tomorrow!!!!
