Good rainy wtf? rainy post Goddo-hell-razors Saturday morning fellow Calgary live music lovers. 2nd to last weekend before Christmas and lots of great live music happening tonight in and around C-town. Ralph Boyd Johnson “has been compared to Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen and John Prine and is cut from the same cloth as icons Hank Williams Sr., Tom Waits, Lou Reed and the like”. High praise indeed but Ralph’s great songwriting and honest straight from the heart delivery make his live performances must see events. Tonight you can catch him at Mikey’s Juke Joint, a place tailor-made for a show such as this. Earlier in the day you’ll have Mikey leading his Saturday afternoon blues jam 3-7 that is before he runs off to the Ironwood tonight to be part of the final night of Steve Pineo’s Annual Christmas Bash, 9 start. From 2-4 at the Ironwood today it’s the last Prime Time Big Band Brunch of 2014 and I’d expect a bit of x-mas flavor in this one, doors noon. Talking great songwriting and straight from the heart delivery, Joe Nolan is quite a few years younger than Ralph but he is an old spirit when it comes to performing his unique brand of roots-folk with his shows frequently transcend this earthly plain. Joe is playing Wine-Ohs tonight. It’s Tim Williams day at the Blues Can today and all night with Tim hosting his blues jam this afternoon 3-7 and then sticking around to be joined by his Electrofires for the second and last show of a two-night stand this evening. Talking Blues Jams, not far away at the Shamrock this afternoon you have the King Eddy Jam usually hosted by Bill Dowey. However not sure if that’s the case today as Bill has been ailing of late. He’s a tough old nut though so won’t rule out his hosting and regardless the jam is happening. Tonight at the Shamrock it’s the Kabuki Guns Brrrrr-lesque show with Guests. Looking for a jam not mentioned here visit the Calgary Jam Scene Facebook, The source of great Calgary jam intel. Our friends Jim & Sylvia at the Cornerstone Music Café have a great matinee lined up today with Camie Leard and Tim Martin playing the little café that could 3:30-5:30. The Lovebullies are hosting their Guilty Pleasures Christmas Jam and Calgary Food Bank Fundraiser at the Ship and Anchor with musical guests Eve Hell and the Razors who we caught last night at Mikey’s. This one is gonna be a monster as they are also gonna be joined by Magnolia Buckskin, Michael Platt, The Bownesians, Will White, The Sadlier-Brown Band, Kris Demeanor and many many more also helping out. “Come for the Paul Anka and stay for the Wham! Its ok! We can all go to confession the next day....Bring your penny jars and some sharp scissors. The Bullies have some interesting ways to part you and your money!” – Caroline Connolly As I inferred above, we caught Eve Hell and the Razors last night, grrrreat rockabilly show. Tonight in town there’s another grrrrreat rockabilly show with the The Hi-Strung Downers and The 427s playing the Palomino. I believe this is the debut public performance of Greg Callsen as a Downer and I’m gonna miss it. Damn! This one is gonna be a smoker folks! Danny Nix is flying solo at Fionn MacCools. Jim Hutchisons Jazz Works are back for night two at the Bears Den. The Leroys are back at Murrietas, Ben Rose & The Worlds Best Wedding Band at Bookers, Sugarsnap at the Elbow River Casino, New Soul at the Rose & Crown, the Suburban Dwellers at the Pig & Whistle, Mike Lowes at the Tudor Rose and the Amber Fleury Band at the Riverstone Pub. The Rondel Roberts Band play the Vintage Chophouse, the Awesome Brothers are at Swigs, District J The Trop, Prowler play the Sideline, Dr Friday is at Lynwood Station, Blackthorne are at Overtime, and Blueprint the Winkin Owl. Want cowboy go with Netty Mac at Big Als or Ron McNeill and Georgie Lyon at Riverbend Station. The Market Collective have an all-dayer happening at the Chinese Cultural Centre 10-6 with Overland, Walden, Jah Raven, Moon Sakes, and Freshly Squeezed all making the joyful noise. Another great bill at the Nite Owl tonight with Torches To Triggers, The Ativans, Abandin All Hope, and Pervcore. The Ashley Hundred are playing a Landmark Events Showcase at the Republik. Out of town to the north…it’s that time of year for the Highway Three Roots Revue to take it out on the road and tonight John, Dave and Leeroy are doing just that playing a Cafe Radio hosted show at the Roulston Museum in Carstairs. In Red Deer, 9 Second Ride are back at the Hideout. Moving south, Spur Crazy are back at the Auditorium in Nanton and further south Blacksmith play the Slice in Lethbridge. Good buds the Rustic Brothers are back at the Canmore Hotel (last night) and Funk & Disorderly return to the Drake Inn, last night also. In Banff, Elk Run & Riot are at the Elk & Oarsmen while Flat Line Phoenix and Kixxsin each finish off three night stands at the Rose & Crown and Wild Bill’s respectively. Play safe and keep it live.
