Google pledges Sh42.5 million for project to protect rhinos Internet giant Google Thursday pledged $500,000 (Sh42.5 million) towards the launch of wireless 24 hour camera “traps” to protect rhinos from poachers in the expansive Tsavo National Park. The project to be implemented by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) will use Raspberry Pi computers to curb the poaching of rhinos in Kenya. This follows a successful bet by ZSL in an ongoing Global IT challenge competition aimed at awarding cash prizes to innovative use of technology. The cameras, which are powered by Raspberry Pi computers, use automated sensors to transmit images of intruders in the park and triangulate the sounds of gunshots. These features will allow rangers to quickly pinpoint poachers’ locations and intervene immediately. The move follows the killing of seven rhinos in the past week at Lake Nakuru National Park, Solio Ranch near Nyeri, Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary in Tsavo West National Park, Meru National Park in the north of the country before launching another attack at the privately owned Oserian Wildlife Sanctuary in Naivasha where three rhinos were killed. In Africa one rhino is killed every 11 hours, with poachers answering soaring demands for the animal’s horn.
