(Gordon) Kemptonpark: A police officer (27) sustained severe injuries to the head when he was attacked by a suspect and a mob of men aged between 23 and 41 on Wednesday. 17 January 2014 The officer was patrolling with a colleague when they were called to a robbery at a store on Pretoria Road. They responded and chased the suspect who was believed to have stolen a television set and a DVD player, said Capt Jethro Mtshali, Kempton Park SAPS spokesman. The suspect was caught and as the officers were putting him into the van, he resisted arrest. A group of men interfered with the police and started to assault one of the officers. During the scuffle one of the men grabbed the officers firearm which was later recovered. When back up arrived, the police were able to arrest eight men, including the robbery suspect, said Mtshali. The men will be charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and the robbery suspect will also face additional theft and robbery charges. Station commander, Brig Johannes Marx, appeals to the community to assist the police and not distract them from executing their duties in their attempts to keep our communities safer, added Mtshali.
