Got 12 episodes into Sword Art Online before I finally gave up. Its so awful. The episode plots do nothing to take advantage of teh great premise and the characters are awful. I cant believe so many people recommended teh series to me. The episode that killed it for me was the one where the main characters discover a child in the woods and it turns out to be a super powerful AI program with amnesia who decided it wants to be their child and insists on calling them Mommy and Daddy. Ugh. Although really, every episode past the 2nd has been really poor. The female main characters abrupt shift from quiet, competent bad ass to whiny, emotional girl friend who cant take care of herself and needs the male main character to fight completely inexplicable duels over her was mentioned to me ahead of time, and it was as bad as I had expected. Lots of little things bothered me as well. The main characters wonder how theyll be able to keep in contact once they escape teh game and if theyll ever be able to find each other again. Do they not have phone numbers? Facebook Accounts? Twitter? Cant she just say heres my number, text me when you get out and well go on a date? I really do like the premise. People stuck in an MMO for years, forced to choose between trying to live a normal life in a virtual world or risk dying to level up and clear the dungeons one level at a time so they can escape is pretty neat. I feel like theres a lot of neat stories to tell with something like that. in 12 episodes SAO managed to do nothing interesting at all, which is just kind of astounding.
