Got a bad interpretation of rule 6.02 tonight when the umpire called an automatic strike for the batter stepping out of the box. Didnt affect the game, but I hope they dont call that all year. The rule (Dixie and MLB same rule, same place) states the penalty is allowing the pitch and then he is to call a ball or a strike, as it may be. The ball would have loaded the bases with one out in a three-run game. I tried to plead my case graciously. No where does it state the umpire has the discretion to call an automatic strike. Oh well.
