Got a call from BSNL today asking for my email id. The lady on the other side was soft spoken and explained that in case the physical copy didnt reach my address they could send me a soft copy. I heard her out but declined to give her my email id. Why? Everyone in India is crazy about address proofs. While organizations claim that they accept a wide range of address proofs; there is usually a very narrow and limited sweet spot. That typically happens to be invoices from government agencies. Not only that they also usually demand to look at the physical copy first. Secondly I also doubted her statement that the physical bills will still be dispatched. For all you know the billing engine may simply look at the email field being not null and decide to shoot email copies rather than physical ones. If the validation system is so rigid there is little benefit in being flexible. One of the very few occasions where I choose to forego the convenience of a soft copy
