Got a friend whose husband is stuck in Solomon Islands flooding and cant get out. She is very distraught. Rang Australian Embassy in Honiara, the office is currently closed diverted to Canberra. Explained situation, told what do you us to do. Asked who is on the ground supporting Australians. Told local office is closed. Again told dont understand what you want us to do. Asked What is current disaster rating? We dont work that way. Asked so what do local Australians do to get support. response I dont know what you want us to do. Has an emergency hotline been setup, response .... No why?. Who is the local contact on the ground now. Response the office is closed. Outcome the best support Australian families will receive in international emergencies is a scripted from some glorified call centre person in Canberra. Lesson learned... Best information is on google and act accordingly.
