Got a minute? Check out this very brief video that highlight the Medical Laboratory Technician program at Rasmussen College in Green Bay! Intrigued? Our MLT program is a great fit for science or healthcare-minded people who are looking for a quick, quality and affordable pathway to a great career. Answers to common questions: What do MLT’s do? Medical Lab Technicans analyze body fluids, such as blood, urine, and tissue samples, and record normal or abnormal findings. They also study blood samples for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types. MLT’s also operate sophisticated laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters, and use automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests at the same time. Administrative work is also important, as MLT’s will log data from medical tests and enter results into a patient’s medical record. Finally, they discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians, and sometimes supervise or train medical laboratory technicians. In Wisconsin, MLT’s make between $16.19 and $22.89 an hour, which is $33,850 to $46,710 per year. How long is the program? The program takes about 2 years (or less, depending on transfer credits) to complete. You will take 3-4 classes every 11 weeks, with a 2-week break before the next quarter. This continues year-round, to ensure a timely graduation. Your last 2 quarters are a hands-on externship that Rasmussen locates for the student. Classroom Format? The classes are presented in a blended format. Some of the classes can be completed online, for greater flexibility, while all lab-based and hands-on classes are held at the Green Bay campus. To accommodate the busy schedules of our students, the MLT coordinator tries to keep all MLT classes on just one day a week.
