Gotta get all this negative news outta my head for a little while. And how do I do that? I talk about the realities of cannabis. Excuse me while I ramble ....... The cannabis plant is a freaking weed. Thats all and nothing more. Just a freaking weed. However, there are several families of this weed. For example in areas away from the equator, cool climates, such as the Himalaya mountains and surrounding areas, Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc etc, the plant is short, bush like and each leaf has 7 wide leaflets. It also has a short growing period and seldom reach more than 5 feet tall. These weeds are known as the Indica varieties. Thats plural because there are several strains within a variety. From a sprouted seed it can take as little as 3 to 4 months for a seed to grow into a fully flowered plant. Closer to the equator the cannabis weed has a longer growing cycle. It can grow to between 8 and 12 feet tall easily and some are known to be near 20 feet. The foliage has leafs with 7 skinny leaflets. Its believed the shape allows better air flow through the plant providing good aeration of the foliage. These are known as the Sativa varieties and yes there are several strains of these as well. It can take 4 to 5 months for a sativa seed to finish its life cycle as a fully flowered plant. Cannabis patients usually have one strain of each Indica and Sativa they prefer. They will use the Sativa in the morning and as needed through the day because it does not give them that drowsy sluggish feeling often associated with Indica strains. And it is for that difference they will chose Indica before bedtime to help them sleep and rest up for the following busy day. A third cannabis is called Ruderalis. Unlike Indica and Sativa, Ruderalis is not photoperiodic. Photoperiodic simply means its lifespan from seed to flower and seed production, are determined by very short seasonal cycles of the sun. Ruderalis weeds are believed to have originated in the long winter areas of China and Russia. They tend to be very small, maybe 2 feet at most with an Indica shape and leaf but they can grow from seed to harvest in as little as 8 weeks. They have less usable material than India or Sativa but their small size is ideal for those who have very limited growing space in apartments. The harvest is smaller but 6 harvests a year is fair compensation. A great deal of work has gone into creating strains comparable to its big sisters. Today those who grow these miniatures in a closet at home are able to enjoy similar aromas and tastes as well as medicinal benefits as other patients. In fact, high cbd strains available today owe a portion of their genetics to ruderalis plants. Ruderalis is known for its high cbd content. But some hemp varieties are also known for high cbd content. The drawback of hemp in medical cannabis is it also passes along its very low product yield. In other words the hemp plant makes small flowers compared to the size of ruderalis flowers. Breeding, back breeding and crossbreeding indica, sativa and ruderalis to produce a new and stable strain with a desirable cannabinoid profile takes years. It is a work of love and an art. There is no way it an be done that is profitable. Corporate growers say they can, but they cant. The specialty strains from corporate growers have either been purchased as clones from someone or they copied other growers genetic diagrams and simply renamed their products. Not even the family that grows the famous Charlottes Web strain used by so many children is making a living from their strain. It just isnt possible to recover the value of your time spent creating a new specialty strain. But I would put the time and thousands of dollars into doing exactly that if Oklahoma would move into the 21st century and shed its draconian propaganda. Okay - I feel better - all done for now
