Gov Nggilari Under Fire Over Call For Suspension Of Election In Adamawa Condemnation has trailed the call by Adamawa State governor, Barr Bala James Nggilari over his call for the suspension of elections in the state, adding that the call is pregnant with danger. Various stakeholders described the position as selfish, ill timed and not in tandem with the calls of the people who are poised never to be disenfranchised, adding that “the governor is on his own”. While condemning the stand of the governor, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Dr. Umar Ardo, said if the call of the governor is heeded, it will lead to a constitutional quagmire in the state, adding that there is no basis for the call as it portends danger to the polity. “If there is no election in the state, we are going to have problems. It means the government of the day will have to continue beyond the terms they were elected. It will result in a constitutional crises and constitutional quagmire,” he said. Ardo noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that an enabling environment will be created for internally displaced persons to cast their votes, adding that with the situation, there is no need for the call. He similarly faulted the governor over his choice of April for the conduct of the election, asking him if he has a guarantee whether the situation will be normalised before his suggested date. Ardo further noted that suspending the election will only complicate the woes of the state, noting that the conduct of the election may even premise the end of the insurgency currently bedeviling the state. While condemning the call, former north east vice chairman of the All Progressives Congress and candidate of the party for Federal House of Representatives (Michika and Madagali Federal Constituency) said the call is devious, unwarranted, disgraceful and unexpected of a person occupying the exalted position of a governor. He accused Nggilari of lying when he said he was voicing the wishes of the people, adding that at no time did the governor consult with anybody before making the remark. “He is not sincere as he never consulted with any stakeholder or even convene a stakeholders meeting so that we can agree on a common position before he could make it public,” he said. Duhu expressed dismay that despite the fact that the most troubled states of Borno and Yobe are worst hit by the insurgents, they have agreed to hold elections, while the reverse is the case with Bala Nggilari, indicating that the governor must be up to something dicey. He said contrary to the governor’s claim, the people of Adamawa State are more than willing to be part of the election, resulting to the massive collection of permanent voter cards which more than 90 percent of the people of Michika and Madagali have collected. This, he noted, testifies to their readiness to partake in the election.
