Government acquires six marine boats for the Ghana Police Service NDC in its 2012 manifesto promised to “Provision of security for oil and gas installations and operations” in view of these, • Six boats have been secured by government for the Marine Unit of the Ghana police service. • This will enhance the country’s maritime security. • Personnel have been trained to man the boats which have been well equipped for security operations. • The specialized training includes swimming, karate, weapon handling, surveillance and observation, patrol rescue operations, the fisheries Act and Regulations. • The Unit would collaborate with other sister-security agencies to deal with maritime security. • The acquisition of the boats is part of the moves by the government to make the country’s coast unattractive for piracy, illegal fishing, drug and human trafficking. • The marine unit was re-establishing following increasing security challenges along the coast with the discovery of oil. • The marine unit will complement the Ghana Navy in its security efforts.
