Governor Pat Quinn and Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider released the Illinois Bike Transportation Plan on April 16. The plan provides the Illinois Department of Transportation with policies and an implementation plan to help create a multi-modal, sustainable transportation system in the state that promotes safety and prevents bicycle accidents.In a press release, Schneider said that the five key principles of the plan are safety, connectivity, access, choice and collaboration. Governor Quinn said that the plan would help develop a safer transportation system for everyone who rides a bike in Illinois. Quinn said that bicycling is a safe, green, cost-effective form of transportation that would be expanded through the plan.The plan was created over 16 months with input from bicyclists, non-profits and local agencies.
