Governor Pence Names P.E. MacAllister 2014 Recipient of Indiana Sachem Award Indianapolis – Governor Mike Pence today named Pershing Edwin “P.E.” MacAllister as the 2014 recipient of the Sachem Award. The Governor plans to present MacAllister with the Sachem at an official ceremony in the coming months. P.E. MacAllister embodies the character, industriousness and generosity that is the essence of the Sachem Award,” said Governor Pence. “His impact on the life of our capital city, and Indiana as a whole, is incalculable. His civic involvement promoting economic development and the arts has made our economy and our cultural life more robust and enriched the lives of countless Hoosiers. Young people who aspire to make a difference in our state need look no further than the life and example of the creative visionary and legendary leader P.E. MacAllister. It is a privilege for me as Governor to honor P.E. MacAllister with the 2014 Sachem Award for his many contributions to Hoosiers in central Indiana and the state as a whole. ” Born and raised in Milwaukee, MacAllister graduated from then Carroll College in 1940. He served five years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a captain and later moved to Indianapolis to join his father’s Caterpillar dealership, called MacAllister Machinery Co. Since 1952, MacAllister has served as chairman of the board for the family company, where his son now serves as president and COO. From 1982 to the mid-2000s, MacAllister hosted On Site, an interview-style talk show focused on the arts and culture of Indianapolis. MacAllister is still active in television today. MacAllister has played an essential role in the development of Indiana’s capital city and the growth of its arts and cultural areas. He previously served as executive director of the Council on Cities as well as former President George W. Bush’s appointee to the Advisory Committee on the Arts for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. MacAllister also served as president of the Capital Improvement Board, where he played a key role in developing the Hoosier Dome, the Convention Center, and Lucas Oil Stadium. He has also helped lead community and cultural organizations including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Opera, for which he created the MacAllister Awards, which were presented from 1979 to 2002, for up-and-coming singers. An alumnus of Carroll University, he has served on the school’s board of trustees since 1963, and in 1990 he established the P.E. MacAllister Endowed Chair. In 1996, he and his wife donated funds to increase the endowment to $1 million. Full-tuition scholarships are also awarded to future students based on academic excellence and achievement through the MacAllister Fellowship. Earlier this year, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded MacAllister with the prestigious 2014 Ernest T. Stewart Award for Alumni Involvement, which honors an individual for service to one’s alma mater and is the highest honor CASE presents to an alumni volunteer. MacAllister was also the 2008 recipient of the Michael A. Carroll Award, presented annually to an individual who embodies the former deputy mayor’s determination, dedication, and enthusiasm for the community. Indianas highest honor, the Sachem, whose name comes from the Algonquin term given to leaders who exhibit wisdom, judgment and grace and whose character underscores the importance of moral example, is given annually to Hoosiers who have shown these qualities. Previous recipients include college basketball coaching legend John Wooden; the Reverend Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame and world statesman; philanthropist Jane Blaffer Owen; and gospel music singing and songwriting pioneers Bill and Gloria Gaither. Governor Pence named Don Wolf, of northeast Indiana, as the 2013 recipient of the Sachem Award.
