Governor Signs Bill to Launch California Earthquake Early Warning System Via Public-Private Partnership Scotts Valley, CA September 24, 2013 – In signing State Senate Bill 135, Governor Brown today, has directed the California Office of Emergency Services to develop a statewide earthquake warning system in partnership with private industry. Industry members applaud the announcement and the inclusion of private firms, in the process ensuring the best technology and private sector expertise contributes to building a world class earthquake warning system. “We commend Governor Brown and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Director Ghilarducci for exhibiting leadership and ensuring that reasoned, State focused, interests are baselines for a California Earthquake Warning System are addressed in the bill” stated Scott Nebenzahl, Vice President and Director of Government Affairs for Seismic Warning Systems, Inc. The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services should continue to ensure that the establishment of a California Earthquake Warning System is appropriately focused protecting all of the State’s residents and business. Seismic Warning Systems believes it is possible to develop a California earthquake warning system that protects everyone, (even those close to the epicenter), is California specific, and is financially sustainable. SB135 acknowledges the importance of public-private partnerships to create and manage a statewide earthquake warning system that will be effective. Existing projects as exemplified by the Regional Public/Private Earthquake Warning projects in Riverside and Imperial Counties are a model for the state to build a workable earthquake warning system with the highest quality, in the shortest amount of time, and with the least amount of taxpayer funds. “Collaboration between government and the private sector is essential to the success of a statewide earthquake warning system”, commented George Dickson, III, CEO & Founder, Seismic Warning Systems, Inc. Dickson continues, “Our number one priority is to save lives, but earthquake early warning can also save billions of dollars in damage to business and infrastructure” said George Dickson. Dickson adds, “Working with regional government, first responders and schools, our team has already developed a cost effective regional earthquake warning model. Our technology alerts in less than a second, with no blind spots and no false positives to date.”
