Governor’s Cup awarded to Andrew Hunn Champion one-design helmsman Andrew Hunn was awarded the prestigious Governor’s Cup at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s annual Prize Night held at the club last evening. Commodore Richard Batt, in announcing the award, said Andrew had been chosen by the Club’s Past Commodores, selected Andrew from a list of six other RYCT members provided by the Sailing Committee, “illustrating what a great year of sailing and success the nominees have enjoyed.” In addition to Andrew Hunn, the nominations for the Governor’s Cup for 2013-1014 were Greg Prescott, Tony Lyall, Matthew Bugg, Robert Gough, Julian Salter and Nick Rogers. Andrew and his crew, sailing various one-design yachts, known as Voodoo Chile, in November 2013 won the MC38 Australian championship in Sydney, in February 2014 finished second overall in the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 National title in Hobart and in March 2014 won the Melges 32 Australian championship in Sydney. In addition, the Farr 40 Voodoo Chile, helmed by co-owner Lloyd Clark in October 2013 won the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Queensland championship, in December 2013 won the Farr 40 Class One Design Trophy in Sydney and in February 2014 finished second overall in the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Tasmanian State championship in Hobart. Accepting the Governor’s Cup, Andrew stressed that each of his successes had been a team effort, adding “each of these one-design class boats is a crew-driven boat.” The Commodore also presented the Past Commodores’ Trophy for Services to Yachting to Peter Campbell, editor of the Tasmanian Yachtsman, for his “tireless contribution to the RYCT and the Tasmanian sailing community over many, many years.” The Lesley Cooper Memorial for Outstanding Services to the Club was awarded to Mick Purdon with other nominees being Murray Jones and Steven Shield. Four young sailors were nominated for the Commodore’s Trophy for Most Outstanding Youthful Participant: Sam King, Charlie Connor, William Wallis and Jock Calvert, with Sam King named as the winner of this year’s award. The Prize Night saw summer, Winter and Twilight racing senior and junior pennants presented to winning skippers, with Vice Commodore Matthew Johnston pointing out that although the main focus during the summer sailing season for keelboats had been on the Combined Clubs event “the Club still considers that Summer Pennants remain an important part of our traditions.” Plaques were also presented to the owners who made their boats available as official vessels for racing conducted by the RYCT during the past season. Offshore Trophies for the Juicy Isle Channel Race, the TasPorts Maria Island Race and the Veolia Bruny Island Race were awarded to winners and placegetters, with the Britannia Trophy for the Best Overall Performance in Offshore Races being awarded to Footloose, owned and skippered by Stewart Geeves. Cruising events, including the Muir Winches Navigation and Seamanship Cruise, were recognised along with a long list of perpetual trophy winners. A full report will be published in the next edition of the Tasmanian Yachtsman. Peter Campbell 31 May 2014
