Graduate Student Opportunity! Graduate Student Opportunity in Blueberry Pest Chemical Ecology We are currently seeking a motivated graduate student to investigate blueberry cultivar preference by a range of pest species. In particular, the effects of variable host volatile mixtures produced by different blueberry hybrids on insect detection, oviposition and infestation of crops will be evaluated. The candidate will focus on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of host volatile emissions as affected by cultivar, in conjunction with the host selection by each pest species. In addition, a Gas Chromatography-Electroantennography and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry will be used to identify key odour cues which may permit discrimination between cultivars. Research will be conducted in collaboration between the Dixon laboratory at the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre (St. John’s, NL) and the Hillier lab at Acadia University (Wolfville, NS). Options may exist for conducting the majority of research at either venue. Qualifications: Successful candidates should be highly motivated, and have a keen interest in chemical ecology, entomology, and integrated pest management. Must be able to work well independently and with a team, and have a good suite of communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants must hold a B.Sc. in biology or a related discipline and meet requirements for admissions as a graduate student to Acadia University. Experience in entomology, chemistry or neuroscience an asset but not required. Please refer to the following websites for additional information: acadiau.ca/reg/admissionsNEWSITE/gradPrograms.htm#appInformation gradstudies.acadiau.ca/ biology.acadiau.ca/home.html Applications for graduate study at Acadia University must be received by February 1, 2012 to be considered. Start date and stipend: Start date will be May 2014. Funding is for 2 years and comprised of research funding, but may be supplemented with teaching assistantships and/or scholarships.
