Gramophone’s Composer of the Week, Anton Bruckner, was born on this day in 1824. Bruckner was famed for his symphonies, influenced by his idol Richard Wagner. His symphonies were not always well-received however; have a look at our profile of Bruckner, and read about the disastrous premiere of his Third Symphony in Vienna, which was greeted with catcalls from an anti-Wagner, pro-Brahms faction of the audience. Yet the tide turned – after conducting the premiere of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, Arthur Nikisch wrote, ‘Since Beethoven there had been nothing that could even approach it.’ More recently, recordings of Bruckner’s Fourth and Fifth Symphonies have both won Gramophone Awards.
