Grand Budapest Hotel Lets start with this. Even if I didnt want to be charmed by Wes Anderson films, I probably would be. If you know me, and I hope you do, deliberate and fastidious would not be words you used to describe me. Ive always been more of a broad strokes sort of fellow, a shotgunner, not a sniper. I get the job done, but its up close and messy sometimes. Wes Anderson is a sniper. Being a sniper requires vision. Wes Anderson has vision unlike any director that has ever been. Thats not to say that you always agree with his vision. But you cannot deny that he has it. I would be content to call his work overwrought and call it a day, but thats like denying Gaudi the Sagrada Familia for the same crime. Behind the symmetry, behind the color palates and the art direction and the deliberate pacing are always outstanding stories of humanity. The performances he allows are always interesting, if not seemingly, through all the other control of every aspect of his films, unconstrained. This juxtaposition creates tension that other films, in their balance, cannot muster. Grand Budapest Hotel is not my favorite Wes Anderson film. Dont get me wrong, its outstanding. It wont stick with me like The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, or The Life Aquatic because thematically it doesnt resonate as much with me. But it is still very, very good.
