Grand presents Rebirth Brass Band FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 2, 2014) – The Rebirth Brass Band will bring its infectious mix of traditional brass band music and funk to the Grand Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15. Rebirth was founded in 1983 by tuba player Phil Frazier, his brother, bass drummer Keith Frazier, and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins. New Orleans brass bands tap into a rich tradition that dates to the late 19th century, combining military brass music with African folk music. Early jazz often featured New Orleans brass bands. In the early 1980s, the genre enjoyed a renaissance, with the Rebirth Brass Band among its proponents. Besides the Frazier brothers, the band’s lineup varies, but typically includes a snare drummer, two saxophonists, two trombonists, and two trumpeters. While firmly rooted in the typical brass band instrumentation, Rebirth pleases audiences internationally with a nod to modern hip-hop sensibilities. As one review said, “A wide spectrum of ages and ethnic groups finds something comfortable and something they can relate to in the meld of classic R&B, New Orleans funk, soul, rock and jazz the band performs.” Rebirth’s diverse talents were on full display on the popular HBO series “Treme’,” named for a musically rich neighborhood in New Orleans. In fact, members of the band appeared in the show’s first episode participating in a jazz parade. Rebirth has established a reputation for audience interaction. As one review put it,”a stage is little more than a platform for the Rebirth Brass Band, and the distance it imposes on an audience is a passing inconvenience, even on the road.” Rebirth’s playing style can be deceptive. One reviewer said, “Rebirth can be precise when it wants to, but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos; as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anybody can cut loose.” The band has recorded more than a dozen albums, including the critically acclaimed 2011 recording “Rebirth of New Orleans.” TICKET INFO Tickets for the Rebirth Brass Band remain in all price categories. Tickets are $25, $35 and $45 and may be purchased online at the Grand Theatre Web site, grandtheatrefrankfort.org, or by visiting the ticket office, 312 W. Main St., weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The phone number is 502-352-7469.
