Grant Frerichs interview: Brought to you by Motul. Proud lubricant partner of the 2014 Roof of Africa. 1) Grant, you are a top motocross rider, but what has prompted you to do the Roof of Africa? It has always been a goal of mine to complete the roof in the same way as triathletes wish to complete an iron man or cyclist to do the cape epic. Ive always wanted to be able to tell people I finished gold at the roof because it is a big accomplishment and many people who arnt involved in the industry know about the roof of Africa so they are then able to relate. 2) What class are you riding at the Roof? I am riding the gold glass. Many people laugh at me when I tell them this or say I am crazy for even attempting gold but Ive always said Ill rather not finish gold than finish silver or bronze because, to me, thats not a true roof finish. 3) Has the transition been easy or tough? The transition has been extremely difficult. A lot more difficult than I expected. Coming from mx we try our best to avoid rocks and find the smooth line but now I find myself looking for the most rocks to ride to try prepare for the roof. Obviously my bike skills from riding motocross my whole life helps a lot but there is a completely new technique to riding which I am having to learn which I enjoy. It is very much like supermoto and motocross where the basic bike is similar but the way you have to ride it is completely different but I am enjoying learning more and more every time I ride enduro and I can feel I get better each time as my skills adapt to the different environment. 4) Have you done any Lesotho training? I went to Lesotho for the first (and only) time this week with 2 friends and I absolutely loved it. We got caught in rain and hail on the one pass and did a few proper climbs and descents that have been in the past gold routes. Lesotho is a magical place when it comes to enduro riding. 5) What are your expectations for the 2014 Roof? All I want to do is be a gold finisher. If I am the last person to finish I will be over the moon. 6) Are you bringing an MX fan base to the race? Most of the mx guys have no interest in the enduro but Ill have all my close friends there as pit crew and support so it will be nice to see them all when I come into the dsp. 7) Is this a once off attempt, or will you give it a few goes? The plan was always to just do the roof once and finish it the first time of everything goes according to plan but I am enjoying the different types of riding and the people I have met along the way so we will see how things goes. I have no future plans set in stone. 8) Anyone you would like to thank who made this possible for you? I would just like to thank all the guys from the enduro community for being so friendly and welcoming towards me. I have made so many new friends along this journey and they have made my enduro experience so much more enjoyable so far.
