Vigil ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Graphic Artist performs a variety of technical and professional duties related to the production and revision of official printed materials and digital products for all City departments using traditional graphics methods and computer software. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general and indirect supervision of the assigned manager. SUPERVISION EXERCISED May provide close to general supervision to support staff as needed. NATURE OF WORK Essential Functions: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position. • Provides graphics services for City departments; consults with departments and advises them on their graphics needs; obtains quotes from regional printers for departments; monitors and schedules print jobs; works with printing vendors to perform graphics services; obtains bids from vendors; picks up and delivers orders from vendors; and, resolves problems on and off site with vendors when necessary. • Produces quality artwork in a timely and cost-effective manner; designs, drafts, details and manages files to produce or revise: City forms in paper form and digital interactive formats: pamphlets: brochures: and any other printed material from rough drafts or existing documents. May perform copywriting edit of text. Ensures documents comply with City policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. • Maintains current knowledge of industry-standard software and hardware. Recommends and maintains budget for Graphics Section; orders supplies, software and hardware; and, handles purchase of all City business cards. • Completes special projects -- including Recreation Activity Guide, Monthly Senior Citizens Newsletter, Santa Fe Trends, Data Graphs, Santa Fe Trails Bus Schedules and informational materials for their respective programs, Annual Calendars, City sponsored promotional events, t-shirt design; coordinate public service announcements with Utility Billing cycles, posters, brochures, advertisements for publications or large format such as bus wrap specifications and others; functions as Publications Manager and/or Art Director as needed; and, handles project coordination tasks. • May provide training on graphic programs to departments. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience High School diploma or equivalent; and, four (4) years of experience in graphic design. Up to two (2) years of college course work in graphic design or related field may substitute for two (2) years of experience at a rate of 30 semester hours equals one (1) year of experience. Additional Requirements Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license and obtain a City of Santa Fe driving permit within three (3) months of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of computer graphics software - Corel Draw, Adobe Creative Suite which includes Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver; laser printers; sheet and page design; specific folds and methods, type and type specifications; reproduction methods; printing specifications; graphic design, illustration, specialized design for large formats and promotional type products; knowledge of interactive PDF forms creation and management of interactive forms; file management on multiple shared drives and local drives; archival file management of an organizational database and production; and budgeting/budget monitoring. Skill in art and design; process and production; interpersonal relations; and verbal/written communication. Ability to read and understand type, printing, drawing, and illustration specifications; and use graphics design and drafting instruments. Physical Demands/Work Environment Work is primarily performed in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls and exposure to VDT’s and CRT’s. Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Periodic walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting of seventy five (75) pounds; sitting for long periods, and reaching are required in the normal course of essential job duty performance. Speaking, hearing, and seeing are essential to the effective performance of position tasks. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required for most essential functions. Mental application includes memory utilization, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking. Some travel and evening/weekend work may be required.
