Graphic staff plan solidarity strike over Kenu’s dismissal Angry staff of the Graphic Communications Group Limited are expected to lay down their tools in solidarity with their sacked colleague Daniel Kenu. Daniel Kenu was dismissed by his employers on Wednesday November 19, 2014 following recommendations from a committee that was set up to look into his conduct, after he unilaterally took a decision to abandon a court case against Baffour Gyan for assault. Graphic said Kenu was sacked for “gross misconduct and disloyalty under section 22(a) of collective bargaining agreement” between him and the company. But the workers are disputing that the committee recommended Kenu’s sack, claiming that it recommended that Daniel Kenu be suspended for a month and apologize to the company at a staff forum. A source within the workers’ union at Daily Graphic told citifmonline that the staff, especially the editorial staff are willing to lay down their tools to compel management to reinstate Daniel Kenu. The workers in the coming days may call for the dismissal of Kenneth Ashigbey, the Managing Director (MD) of the company, whom they accuse of masterminding the dismissal of Daniel Kenu. The internal rift within the company is likely to affect the operations of the company which produces the most subscribed newspaper in Ghana, the Daily Graphic. Daniel Kenu has also accused the MD, Ken Ashigbey of influencing his dismissal. He insisted that “It is the MD who just wants me out. He thinks I’ve embarrassed him. I don’t know what I’ve done against this man.” - But according to the dismissal letter, Kenu was fired for acting “out of disloyalty by unilaterally withdrawing the case from the court.” “More especially when the incident happened in the course of [his] official duty and management had written and assured [him] of its support and had specifically instructed [him] to consult it on any move [he] wanted to take regarding the case, ” the letter stated. - By: Godwin Allotey Akweiteh -
