Gratitude Day 48 Families: My family..... nothing is more important to me than my little pod. Lisa the rock who keeps me moving forward in a million different ways laughter, love, resolve, sympathy, tenderness and that occasional stern lecture when I need a kick in the pants. Georgia and Jake who inspire me to be a better man and dad every day, who surprise me with their intelligence, wit, humor, mischief, sarcasm, irony and freedom of expression. Was I ever that talented or smart at that age? Then of course the pets are part of it all Ivy our stalwart guardian dog who we have had since before Lisa and I were married, Vinny her trusty companion full of beans and puppy love even though he is an old man by dog years. Angel Cake the sweetest most loving cat Ive ever known (she turned Lisa into a cat person not an easy feat). Last but not least Carl our Hermit Crab who delights us with midnight romps around his crab club while Angel Cake keeps a close eye just hoping for a chance to bat him around like a ball of yarn. I wish it could last forever all of the energy, fun, growth and life that saturates our house now. I know it is fleeting though. I can remember my boyhood home and the wonderful crazy chaos we had growing up five children.....how did my parents do it? Now we are all with our own families in different stages or in the case of my baby sister Lisa shes moved on to the next stage of existence. Outside of our immediate family and our birth family are other families to be thankful for, close friends who are like brothers and sisters except for that gene thing, Georgias soccer family composed of two generations Parents and Players, Our school family, people who we trust and who trust us to nurture and care for our kids when they need it, my theatre family some of whom become my stage family for rehearsals and performances when we are cast in a play together. Church, School, Professions, Twelve step groups, Hobbies, Sports, Causes and sometimes circumstances create a possibility of having a family of choice or necessity formed by support, common good, survival, a desire to live a better life and love each other in only the way a family is able to. I am so very grateful for all of the families I have been a part of in my lifetime and all of the families Ive yet to discover. I hope as my own children get older and discover their extended families they experience the same love, support, nurturing and growth that all of my families past and present have given me.
