Gratitude is the best attitude, as the saying goes. With very profound gratitude and great humility, I appreciate the greetings and birthday wishes from my Facebook friends. I thank you all for writing very kind words on my page and remembering me on this day. To quote Voltaire’s words, I write “God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well”. However, today on this New Year Day, I feel a deep sorrow within, that in the midst of the celebrations with our families and friends on our successes, holy-days, vacations, and many more occasions we as human beings forget that more than half of our human brothers in the world are living in misery, thirsty and hungry, under distressfully difficult sub-human conditions. I feel we are collectively failing our human race. Despite professing many religions and isms, and trying to outdo each other in this, we spend more on the wars, celebrations, and personal gratifications. I feel we have a responsibility towards our less fortunate human souls who are not able to come free of shackles of disease, hunger, and backwardness. Let us spare a thought for them today on this New Year Day, remember them, and contribute in our own personal way for their benefit. I end with a supplication (originally in Arabic) for all us which means: O God, please bring us out of darkness of illusions, and honor us with the light of comprehension. O God, open to us doors of your mercy, and propagate to us treasure of your knowledge by your mercy, O the most merciful of merciful ones.
