Gravity-JFK Went to see “Gravity” today. Wasnt going to see based on some bits of reviews (“Boring”) but Art Bell gave it glowing praise the other day. One of those movies I could have walked out mid-way and been ok doing so. Maybe Art had talked about how the drama got into their characters. “Solaris” with George Clooney I immensely enjoyed and have returned a few times but the director of Gravity is NOT Soderbergh, by a long shot. Some unintended belly laughs in Gravity: Sandra Bullock in a Chinese return-to-Earth pod (she made her way to the Chinese space station); to get underway, on her way back to safety, she takes out the pods manual. She did this earlier, in the Russian pod; we can only assume that because she has a PhD that she reads Russian. Chinese manual in hand, staring at the bank of lights, buttons, switches of this complex technical wonder, she is either a reader of Mandarin or lucky, because she presses the right buttons and goes on to experience the last 10 minutes of the adventure. I wont spoil it by saying if she does or does not survive or live to strike a heroic pose for all of man-er-humankind, barefoot, an Eve, like SPOILER ALERT one reborn: beautiful shot of her in Russian pod, having taken off her space suit, floating in tight clothes, with some thick cable drifting behind her, she begins to doze and assumes graceful fetal position; nice. Other than that I suggest Solaris instead. THIS WAS DISTURBING. Aside from the fires, explosions and guns of all the crap that is shown while waiting for the movie there was a preview for “Killing Kennedy” that is to be shown on the National Geographic station November 10. The NatGeo showing is based on the book of the same name by Bill OReilly; one feels certain that it must be fair and balanced. The preview was a small masterpiece of how to reinforce disinformation, think it mentioned the disturbed young man, the gun.
