Gravity – (Director) Alfonzo Cuaron’s career is very much - TopicsExpress

Gravity – (Director) Alfonzo Cuaron’s career is very much checkered. He directed Great Expectations with Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow which was a brutal massacre of a Charles Dickens classic. He also directed Children of Men which I did enjoy. However, I feel that in Children of Men, Cuaron did not really utilize Clive Owen or Michael Caine which really muted the overall experience. Cuaron also directed Prisoner of Azkaban which was decent as far as Harry Potter goes. Looking at these films, I’m very confused what this director is all about. He is big into SIFI and CGi, which I am a fan of, but these movies all missed the mark for me because Cuaron seemed under experienced as a director. Gravity was a huge leap in his directing chops. (Film) I want to start by saying I did not like this film. To be fair this film did do a lot of things right. The CGI was amazing in this film. This movie was incredibly visually stimulating. The camera in the opening scene was so tranquil and graceful. The camera was dancing around our characters making the audience suspended in space. Also the movie mostly floating in space which after an hour and a half makes the end sequence on land seem very triumphant. This movie totally missed the mark. The first 25 minutes were great, the rest was insulting. Sandra Bullock was a wet blanket all movie and George Clooney played Danny Ocean in space. It was a joke. Clooney was completely confident in spite of certain death, but the way he was acting did not match the situation. This movie was a series of trouble shooting events by Bullock. Here is the plot: “I’ve got to get to this hatch.. …wow that was close….No! now I have to get to this hatch….over and over.” At the 45 minute mark I realized the formula. Around the hour fifteen mark I realized I didn’t care about the characters in anyway. The way good SiFi works is to limit epic moments. This movie had so many epic moments that I felt immune. The scoring was really good but too many build ups. Think about the final scene in 2001, it was an opus. Gravity was a joke in comparison. It was a testament to how far we have come in the field of CGI and that is it. I will say the opening camera movements were incredibly well done. But the other hour and a half of this movie was so painful. I was so miserable watching this plunker. The fact that everyone joined the bandwagon on this piece of shit movie makes me feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Zero Character development. C- acting. Wake up people! (High Points) – The opening sequence. (Low Points) – Sandra Bullcock crying and saying “no one ever taught me how to pray.” Just a bottomless pit of a low point for cinema. So cliché and watered down. George Clooney making a mockery of confidence in space, as Danny Ocean. The cheesy infancy shot of Bullock that every octogenarian in the theater could understand. Bottom Line – This movie is an extension of a video game trailer. It’s a 3D movie for 2D minds. I saved my 3D glasses to remind me of the worst cinema experience I have ever had.
