Great Notley Lions 0 – 5 Woodham Radars Jets Starting Line Up: Ben (GK), Connor, Haydn, Jack, Ethan, Daniel, Jake D The first Cup game of the season beckoned at good friends and rivals Great Notley Lions. From the off the Jets were on the offensive, Connor moving quickly through the midfield to see his show skim the far post. Two corner kicks in quick succession forced the Lions goalkeeper into a save from Jake D’s kick. Jack working down the right hand side made some cheeky runs forward, ably supported by Haydn with Ethan and Daniel, kicking the ball away and holding the defence so that Ben, in goal, had very little to do in the first five minutes of the game. Out of the blue, Ben was forced into a save which bounced off the top of the goal, the rebound being kicked away confidently by Ethan. From the back, a pass from Haydn to Jake D saw Jake D with a sliding kick of the ball get it to Connor’s feet who slotted it right in the middle of the net. 0 – 1. A further chance fell to Jake D, a grateful Lions keeper scooping the ball up out of danger. Connor then found himself one on one with the keeper, scooted round him but, under pressure, slotted the ball wide. A triple substitution then took place with Haydn going off for Nathan, Jake D for Marcello and Ethan for Shaun. Shaun immediately made his presence felt by standing solid at the back ensuring that any Lions danger was put to bed quickly and efficiently. Good passing play between Nathan, Marcello and Connor saw another goal attempt saved by the goalkeeper. Marcello’s first corner kick landed directly at Connor’s feet to score the Jets’ second 0 - 2. A second corner kick followed shortly and once again Marcello was able to get it into the box for Nathan to high kick the ball into the back of the net (0-3). Marcello came close to scoring with his head (again) after Connor’s kick saw the ball arrive just beyond the far post. Daniel and Jack, in defensive mode, cleared the ball of any Great Notley danger when it presented itself, with Daniel getting it to Marcello who passed it onto Nathan, his attempt on goal being saved by a plucky Great Notley keeper. Half time came and changes were made. Connor, Jack and Daniel came off to allow Ethan, Jake D and Haydn back on. This did not make any difference to the attacking nature of the Jets play in this game. Ethan was ably supported by Marcello and Nathan up front with Shaun making some nice passes from the centre of the pitch to Nathan. Following the restart Ben was only called upon once to make a save in the first five minutes! Marcello’s shot put the Great Notley keeper under pressure as did three resulting corners which saw Jake D’s kick the ball over the goal. Some lovely set pieces here though!! Ethan, Shaun and Marcello went off to allow Connor, Daniel and Jack back on. Nathan and Connor linked well again for Connor to hit the ball low on the ground and hit the back of the net for his hat-trick (0—4). The last 10 minutes or so of the second half saw some changes to formation with Shaun coming on for Jack, Ethan for Nathan and Marcello for Jake D. Haydn, Ethan and Marcello took the front positions with Connor taking a defensive role. Haydn was masterful down the wing and got the ball to Marcello and Ethan on the opposite wing successfully, Marcello getting the ball to Ethan only for the goalkeeper to save it. A rebound from one of these shots saw the ball land at Shaun’s feet who kicked the ball to goal and for all the supporters it looked like the goal was his. We have reliably been informed though by those that were playing that the ball hit the bar and Ethan made sure that the rebound went into the back of the net. A very convincing win from the Jets against early League leaders Great Notley Lions was rewarded with a lolly from Ethan celebrating his 10th birthday this week. Happy Birthday Ethan from all of us Jets!! MOM: Connor (for his hat-trick) Team: Ben, Daniel, Jack, Haydn, Ethan, Shaun, Nathan, Marcello, Connor, Jake D.
